Bialystok's framework has years of research behind it, and one of its most cited results has nothing to do with childhood test scores. A 2007 study she ran with Fergus Craik and Morris Freedman reviewed the clinical records of 184 patients who had come in with memory complaints, 91 monolingual and 93 bilingual, speaking a mix of 25 languages between them. The bilingual patients showed dementia symptoms at an average age of 75.5, compared to 71.4 for the monolingual group, a roughly four-year delay in symptom onset, with every other measure between the two groups roughly equal.
